Dear 1-O Families,
Next week in reader’s workshop we’ll be looking at books that teach a lessons. Next week Ms. Sailor is having a solo week. I know that she and the first graders will enjoy the week.
We’ll read lots of books with lesson and we’ll try to figure out what the lesson is. We’ll continue to work on our own goals, improving accuracy, fluency and comprehension
In writer’s workshop we’ll all been writing fiction stories. We’ve been using sequence words, First, then next after, finally; add dialogue, actions, and feelings Next week we’ll try to write a sequel or new chapter with some of the same characters.
Our read alouds have been Rechenka’s Eggs by Patricia Polacco, Balance and motion, Baby Bear and the Three Blairs, The Paper Bag Princess, And Everyone Shouted Pull and Gravity.
In math we’ve been working with the concept of ½ and 1/4. We’ve been practicing more with analogue and digital time and polygons .We’ve worked with problems where the unknown is in a non standard place like 7 = _____ - 7 and ______= 5+12
‘We had a stem project of making the tallest tower we could with plastic eggs and playdoh or Kapla blocks and measuring the height of the structure.
In Science we built tops with disks and coffee stirrers. We placed the disks in different positions to see what made the best top. Then we timed the spinning of our tops by counting in seconds - one Mississippi, two Mississippi.
*Please remember 1-O Book Character Day is On Thursday April 20th. We will be dressing up as a favorite character from a book and celebrating our wonderful Intern Ms. Sailor! Students should come dressed as a favorite character from a book you have read
or someone has read to you. First graders need to know the book. (If possible bring the book with you.)
