December 8, 2017
Dear 1-O Families,
You are invited to our
Date: Wednesday, December 20th
Time: 2:30 till 3:00pm
Place: 1-O Classroom
Come join us for a little sharing about Mexico
and some Mexican food tasting and friendship.
This week we read The cuckoo by Lois Elhert – a folktale about an cuckoo in the Mexican rain forest. We read The Giant Saguaro and Cactus Café about the saguaro cactus and the desert in North Western Mexico. We drew saguaro cactuses with waxy crayon and painted the sky with water color paints, then added sand for the desert. We read La Tortuga (The Tortoise) as well as The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Next week we have a whole school Theme time using on The Dot.
In math we start each session with a warm up like counting forward and backward.
Then we break in small groups that rotate in stations. These stations include games, cooperative projects,
a mini lesson, packet work and technology.
If you find your self in a car with your child or waiting, encourage him or her to do a little backward counting. The goal by the end of the year is to be able to count backward form 120 with no ands or pauses.
In writer’s workshop we’ve found that people can have opinions about all kind of things. Students are writing reviews of toys, books, games, sports teams, pets, vacations spots, restaurants and more. This week we worked on adding a lead to our reviews. We are continuing to review letter formation. We worked with tall letters like l, h, k, b. We have a big word wall and a phonics hunk and chunk board. I’m encouraging 1-O friends to use the tools in the classroom and their writing folders as they write and fix a few things. Not so much as to be overwhelming, but a few things.
In reader’s workshop we’ve been learning some tools for comprehension.
We are observing measuring our classroom amaryllis, which is beginning to bloom and our garlic.
Quick reminder: There is an Early Release on Wednesday, December 13th at noon. Please be sure and let me know if your child’s after school plans are different that day.
Also its sound like snow is in our future – kids need snow pants and boots to play on the playground when there is snow – please put your child’s name on the tag of black snow pants.
Have a great weekend!
