Dear 1-O Families,
This has been a very busy week. On Monday we said goodbye to Ms. McCormack who graduated. She gave us all special had painted rocks and we gave her some good books to use with her student books, bubble bath and a her own fidgit spinner.
As a commitment to leaving less waste, as a school we’ve decided to no longer purchase plastic cups for use at the sink. Most kids do have a personal refillable water bottle. Although we have a few cups for emergencies, I’m asking all first grader to try to have a water bottle at school next week. Water bottles will be important for the hot weather and especially important for field day on Tuesday.
All week we’ve been celebrating Summer birthdays. In math kids had a choice of math review packets or Front Row, and one on one math assessments. In reader’s workshop we worked more on making predictions. Everyone loves to turn and talk and share their predictions with friends. Next week we’ll work on asking questions before during and after reading.
We read a really funny book called Land Shark. We read an app book version of
The Magic School Bus Ocean with lots of links to sea creatures information . We read, What Do You Do With an Idea? and began to explore ways to make toys that balance, spin or rolls. We started Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly School Bus. First graders shared strategies for how to make pictures in your head when you listen to a chapter book.
On Thursday we visited the Library and picked books that we will take
home on the last day of school for summer reading.
In writers workshop while looking at our pictures we wrote a setting page, character page, problem page and a solution page for our ocean stories.
We put up balloons for our End of the Year Count down. We have special activities each day. There will be special activities each day. Here are a few days, but I will send a complete list!
