Dear 1-O Families,
You will find your child’s second trimester report card with this letter. Please sign the outside of the envelope and return the envelope only to school. You may keep everything inside the envelope. The report card comment space gives room for only 500 characters and though my comments are not very long – a few didn't fit so I printed the full comment for you on a separate sheet.
In reader’s workshop we’ve been noticing the characters in the books we read and we’ve been reading reader’s theatre plays and bringing characters to life.
We’ve had two read aloud about characters who balance on high wires - Mirette of the high wire, and The Man Who Walked Between the Twin Towers. We’ve been choosing other engaging fiction stories: The Three Little Wolves and the Big, Bad Pig, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Thank You For Taking Care of My Pets, The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark.
In math we worked with “What’s my Rule?” where the same rule is applied to several numbers. It’s a tricky concept, but the kids are doing a good job with it. We tried a real world problem that could be solved with pattern blocks and the “What’s My Rule?” model involving arranging desks and chairs. We practiced notation of time and going from digital to analog time.
In Science we tried to determine whether shapes would balance based on where the weight (clothespins) were placed. We each found a way to balance the point of a dull pencil on our finger using clothespin weights and wire.
On Wednesday for Morning meeting Roman Schaal and Mia White from 5B visited and helped us learn the song -“The Bare Necessities” form The Jungle Book
1-O First Grades are enjoying writing their realistic fiction stories.
Haven Safe did a good job of getting to the hard topic of good touch and weird touch, and presented an entertaining puppet show. Kids got the message and enjoyed the puppets.
Don't forget Book Character Day is Thursday, April 21st. Each First Grade should come dressed as a favorite
character form a children's book.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. O. and Ms. Sailor
