Dear 1- O Families,
I would like to welcome you to the 1- O Family and take this opportunity to introduce myself to anyone who has not worked with me as a teacher. My name is Sarah Oppenheimer and I will be your child’s first grade teacher this year. I graduated from Syracuse University and received a Masters degree from Northern Illinois University in Elementary Education with additional course work in Special Education from the University of New Hampshire. I have a husband who still laughs at my school stories and two grown up children who left small town life for NYC. We also have two cats Tao and Rav. I have been teaching for 30 plus years. It sounds like a long time, but it doesn’t really feel like it, because I’m doing something I really enjoy. Every year brings something new. You may learn other things by exploring our class website. 1-olearningtree.weebly.com
Keeping organized – Choose a really good place in your house to keep library books and classroom good fit books. *Please print your child’s name on things that are important to you; water bottles, backpacks, lunch boxes, sweaters, coats, boots, gloves, hats, etc… especially black snow pants (they all look alike to me and the kids at times).
Backpack - *Please send your child to school with a backpack each day. I will give your child a sturdy red communication folder with pockets for notes and homework and tools to help study. Your child will be bringing home many important notes, books, pieces of finished work as well as homework.
Please do keep a complete change of clothes in your child’s backpack. There are milk spills and sometimes unexpected mud puddles.
Snacks - *Please send your child with a healthy snack. The school day is long. First graders need brain food. The school wellness policy encourages, veggies, fruit and whole grains. There are certainly special occasions and special treats, but this is a good chance to get in the habit of having a healthy snack for the morning snack time.
Science and Social Studies – You will notice that kids in the first grade, 1-2 Multi-age and second grade will all be following the year two themes for science and social studies this year. This year’s themes are Insects (butterflies), Mexico, Weather and Solids and Liquids. Each grade will work with the topics at a level that is developmentally appropriate.
Dismissal - *Please send a note on the first day of school and anytime your child is going home differently than their normal routine. If it is a regular thing like my children is always a walker, one note will due. If it is for an activity for 3 weeks (like Lego club)– just send one note with the dates that apply. First graders like to know what they are doing. They can get anxious. It is easier for your child and for me, and the office if pick up plans are clear.
Contact - Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or concerns. I do check my school e-mail several times during the day firstname.lastname@example.org and you can send notes in the communication folder as well. Know that most of my special times are in the afternoon, so I may not have time for a lengthy reply until later in the day, but I will get back to you.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. First grade is a wonderful year where kids really have a chance to learn and grow as readers, writers, thinkers, mathematicians and friends and I am sure that your child will enjoy it!
